Inspections & Emergency Preparedness
The Industrial Safety Regulation requires work equipment to be checked at fixed intervals by a “competent person for inspection”. The intervals are set in your risk assessment; manufacturer information and insurer rules point the way.
Preparing for emergencies is just as important: who extinguishes, who evacuates, where is the assembly point, who gives first aid? That should be settled before there is a fire.

Frequently asked questions
How often must ladders be inspected?
You set the interval in your risk assessment. In practice an annual inspection is common, more often with heavy use – plus a visual check before every use.
How many first aiders do we need?
At least one from two employees. Five percent of those present in administration and retail, ten percent in other companies.
Do you carry out all inspections yourselves?
A competent person handles many inspections directly. Electrical inspections are done by qualified electricians, installations requiring monitoring by approved bodies – we coordinate everything.
How often must fire extinguishers be inspected?
At least every two years by a competent person, more often under special conditions.
How often should an evacuation drill take place?
The technical rules require drills at appropriate intervals. An annual cycle has proven itself – more often depending on the hazard.
What belongs in an escape and rescue plan?
Floor plan with escape routes, viewer’s location, assembly point, first-aid and fire-fighting equipment, and rules of conduct in case of fire and accidents.
