Risk assessment: what employers need to know

It is mandatory for almost every company – and the most important tool in workplace safety. Here is how to approach it.

Who has to carry out a risk assessment?

Every employer with at least one employee. Section 5 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act says so. The duty applies regardless of sector and size – to offices as much as to workshops.

What goes into it?

The risk assessment answers three questions: What hazards exist? How big is the risk? Which measures reduce it? Add responsibilities, deadlines and a check whether the measures work. Psychological stress such as time pressure is part of it too.

How often must it be updated?

There is no fixed interval. You must update it whenever something changes: new machines, new substances, alterations, an accident. In practice, an annual review has proven useful.
